Van Ness Elementary School

Another Year at Van Ness Elementary!

The new Van Ness Elementary School reopened in Fall 2015! Since then, amazing things have happened. Our school building and grounds have been transformed from a drab eyesore to an engaging and beautiful place for our children to learn and thrive. We also have a beautiful school garden and playgrounds for our younger and older children.

Van Ness Elementary now serves Pre-K 3 through 3rd grade.

We hope you join our excitement for Van Ness. Go Otters!

Congratulations Michelle Johnson!

Van Ness Kindergarten teacher, Michelle Johnson, has won the Rubenstein Award for Highly Effective Teaching! This was no small feat. Out of DC’s 4000 teachers, only 80 were nominated for a Standing Ovation Award, 26 of those teachers had a panel interview, 15 of those received a classroom observation, and just 6 teachers received an award!

Michelle and 5 other extraordinary District teachers will be honored at the Standing Ovation 2019 ceremony in February.

Students will be considered in uniform if they are either 1) wearing a Van Ness logo t-shirt or polo shirt or 2) wearing a light blue or navy blue polo (no logo). Students may wear any pants or shorts on the bottom and closed-toe shoes appropriate for PE class and outdoor play. Cardigans worn over uniform t-shirts can be light blue, navy, or black.

Uniform shirts can be purchased online at:
